“Every statin has been linked to very rare reports of the muscle side effect called Rhabdomyolysis, but Baycol - made by Bayer Pharmaceutical - has been linked to significantly more fatal cases than its competitors.” This quote is from the FDA in August of 2001.

Rhabdomyolysis is a disorder involving injury to the kidney. The injury is caused by toxic effects of the contents of muscle cells. The disorder may be caused by any condition that results in damage to skeletal muscle, especially trauma. It can also be a potentially deadly side effect of “statin drugs.” Statins are drugs that lower cholesterol levels by blocking specific enzymes in the body that are involved in making cholesterol.

High risk factors include:

• Severe exertion (i.e. marathon running)
• Seizures
• Use or overdose of certain drugs
• Trauma
• Heat intolerance or heatstroke
• Alcoholism, with subsequent muscle tremors
• Low phosphate levels

Rhabdomyolysis is a very serious condition that can cause muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, malaise, fever, dark urine, nausea, and vomiting. The most common symptom is muscle ache and/or tenderness - often experienced in the muscles of the back, legs and arms. Another common symptom is darkened urine. This is caused by the release of muscle contents into the bloodstream. Symptoms are often mistaken for symptoms of the flu, which can postpone treatment and allow progression of the disorder. Rhabdomyolysis can be diagnosed through a blood test to measure a person’s creatine kinase levels.

Symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis:

• Abnormal/Dark urine color
• Muscle pain, weakness and/or tenderness
• Fever
• Nausea, Vomiting
• Malaise
• Cramps, Abdominal Pain
• Ankle, Feet or Leg Swelling
• Chest Pain
• Skin Rash
• Kidney Damage

Baycol, introduced in the U.S. in 1997, was marketed by Bayer Pharmaceutical as an effective statin drug (statins lower cholesterol levels by blocking a specific enzyme in the body that is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol). The FDA now recommends that patients who were taking Baycol consult with their physicians immediately to determine if they have suffered any serious side effects from the drug. A Baycol recall was issued in August 2001 after a very high incidence of Rhabdomyolysis was linked to the cholesterol drug at a much higher frequency than other statin drugs. When the Baycol recall was announced, reports of 416 cases of Rhabdomyolysis, including 31 deaths had already been made. Later, it was found that over 100 deaths were linked to Baycol use, with the majority of serious events due to Rhabdomyolysis.

Bayer Pharmaceutical, is now dealing with thousands of lawsuits with the majority of cases alleging instances of Rhabdomyolysis. Most of the Rhabdomyolysis cases occurred in Baycol patients using the statin at higher doses, in elderly patients, and when used in combination with the drug Gemfibrozil.
